Jan van der Crabben recommended this book on 23 May 2011
This book from the Very Short Introduction series is precisely that: A very short introduction. Quick and easy to read, it gives an overview of what warfare meant in the Classical World, and how it was conducted. The focus of the book is less on actual battles, tactics, or equipment, but rather on what we would now call "grand strategy".
The book discusses at length the question whether there ever was a "Western Style of War" by comparing modern perceptions of ancient warfare with the historical facts. What the book is lacking, though, is an overview of warfare in antiquity as a whole: the focus is clearly on Greece and Rome, while Mesopotamia, Egypt, or Persia are barely explored.
